Through such events as the Great Depression, the Second World War, the Holocaust, the initial stages of the Atomic Age and the Cold War, and a series of other disasters – both manmade and natural – society was tested during the 1930s and ’40s to its limits. In spite of these unprecedented trials, civilization was victorious and proved that the forces of freedom and truth are more powerful and enduring than the forces of tyranny and hatred.
