The rising sun on the horizon found in the central window signals a new dawn in mankind’s fortunes, as civilization rises from the Dark Ages and advances to the High Middle Ages and eventually the Renaissance. Thanks to tireless scribes, embroiderers, and monks, knowledge was kept alive during this period in the form of illuminated manuscripts and handmade tapestries, as depicted in the top window, while in the bottom panel the Chinese invent a boon to knowledge: moveable type.
