Long before Gutenberg invented the printing press in Europe, the concept of moveable type was realized by the Chinese alchemist Bi Sheng in the eleventh century. Also invented in China during this period was gunpowder, originally conceived for fireworks for religious practices and entertainment spectacles, then subsequently adapted into an instrument of destruction. In the background is Mesa Verde, hidden home to ancestral Puebloan culture in modern-day Colorado.
