Title

Roots Of Knowledge Panel R3

Description

Shoshone guide Sacagawea gives direction to Meriwether Lewis and William Clark, leaders of the Corps of Discovery that set out in 1804 to study the vast geography, flora, and fauna in the Louisiana Purchase. The theme of this window is that of learning and discovery, as exhibited by such individuals as Alexander von Humboldt, Sir Joseph Banks, Georges Cuvier, and Sequoyah. There are genuine pieces of gold amongst the rocks in the dried river bed. These nuggets are a prelude to the gold rushes in western North America during the nineteenth century. Like other objects in this window, such as the beaver and the cotton, the gold is a resource that drove settlement, production, and commerce.
