Roots Of Knowledge Panel H3

Description

While an early cataract surgery from India takes place in the foreground, a performance of Greek tragedy is held in this window. In the treatise Poetics, the earliest surviving work of dramatic theory (c. 335 BCE), Aristotle laid out six elements to tragedy, starting with the most important: mythos (plot), ethos (character), dianoia (thought), lexis (diction), melos (melody), and opsis (spectacle). These elements are spelled out on the ring surrounding the stage.
