Roots Of Knowledge Panel O3

Title

Roots Of Knowledge Panel O3

Description

A scene set either in the East Indies or the Caribbean captures a moment from the Age of Exploration. As Europeans raced around the globe in search of resources and territory, they came into contact with other peoples, either to beneficial or negative effect. In front are two figures epitomizing such cultural contrast: Bartolomé de las Casas, a Dominican friar from Spain who defended the rights of indigenous people abused in the West Indies, alongside his pupil Enriquillo, a Taíno cacique who rebelled against Spanish rule on the island of Hispaniola.
